Delhi and The Five Senses
Someone like me who don’t speak English is the best example to make progress. Speak, improve, learn, experience, laugh, travel, discover is the lexical used for my internship since I am in India. Little by little, I am detached from my mother tongue; I firmly believe that now I am closer to Indians.
I began to learn the Indian culture first using my eyes. New Delhi is a cosmopolitan city with its own cultural codes (rickshaws, trucks, bicycles, cows, buffalos carrying carts) which makes vibration on this anthill giant.
I began to learn using the speech to meet many Indians. They are evidences of a well anchored culture and they can be proud of that. They taught me lots of things, how to negotiate with a rickshaw wala… they explained me their beliefs on the bad eye and especially how to offset this. India is the cradle of religion. There is a true cohesion between Sikh, Muslim, Hindus, and Christians... I have had the chance to meet these people and see their temples, mosque and churches. Each religious monument I visited was peaceful, spiritual and full of positive energies.
I began to learn using hearing. The most important in the city, is using both important and unreasonable Horn:
- Important because drivers do not use mirrors (finally very little) to see the overtaking vehicle, they rely on their own ears to judge whether the overtaking vehicle is coming from the right or left (it is really confusing at the beginning).
- Unreasonable, means if the way is jammed and you can’t do anything physically then everyone starts honking and you can hear a melodious horn Symphony.
I began to learn using taste. What is India without its flavors and its spices? Cuisine of the North India is really different from the South India, it is just so good!
I started to learn using smell. You should know that New Delhi is very much polluted, but once someone is out a bit of Delhi trails, the smelling sense is on the top leaving other senses behind.
