Ashish, the second winner of the Click On French contest !

Ashish, the second winner of the Click On French contest is back from his trip to Sariska National Park & Tiger Reserve in Rajasthan ! He apparently really enjoyed his week-end with Oasis Tours & Travels, our partner !

"I am very thankful to ClickonFrench Team and Mr. Ramesh Nambiar of Oasis Tours & Travels for providing me such a nice opportunity to discover the Green Paysages of Sariska National Park & Tiger Reserve in Rajasthan (though no Tiger was visible there). I prefered Sariska over other three option viz (Rishikesh-Jaipur-Mandawa) as I have already been to these places.

Les fêtes de Bayonne, ça commence aujourd'hui!

Have you heard about the "fêtes de Bayonne" (festivals of Bayonne)?

bayonne.jpg

Launched in 1932 by a group of rugbymen inspired by the festivals of Pampelune, the capital of the spanish region Navarre, les fêtes de Bayonne welcome an average of a million visitors since the last couple of years. Since 1947, the Mayor of the city entrusts to the bayonnais (inhabitants of Bayonne) the three keys of the city for a 5 days festival. Les fêtes are held between the wednesday before the first week end of August and the next Sunday, i.e. in 2009, from July 29th to August 2nd.

During this festival, all visitors and Bayonnais are wearing the traditionnal dress code: white clothes, along with a red scarf or belt.
With the passing of years, some animations became real traditions: the races of cows in the streets of Bayonne, the competition of "pelote" (the traditional Basque sport) or the corrida.

However, like many popular festivals, excess have been observed. To prevent them, the city has created a commission to promote a respectfull and eco-friendly behavior of all participants.

Les fêtes de Bayonne are a must for all people in the South west region of France at this period!

For more information, rendez-vous on the Fêtes de Bayonne website.

The French and their holidays...

For many people around the world, French people are said to be lazy, benefiting from the 35-hour working week or the paid holidays. While most of French people are now on holiday, I propose you to know more about the French labour law.

Created in 1934 to prevent the emergence of a facist government in France, the Front Populaire (a unification of left political parties) was at the origin of a social policy that changed the French labour law. Lead by Léon Blum, the Front Populaire won the general election in 1936. Before the creation of the new government, 12,000 strikes involving more than 2 millions workers claiming for better labour conditions were held in several regions of France, for the first time inside companies' premises, paralysing the country.

After several weeks of strikes, the corporates agreed on negociations that lead to the Accord de Matignon. These are some of the most significant resolution:

  • an increase of salaries of 7 to 15% was decided,
  • workers have now the right to unionize,
  • the working week came down from 48 to 40 hours,
  • 15 paid days of holiday per year.

The Front Populaire then laid the fundations of the modern labour law in France. In the late 90's, more than 4 billion people benefited from paid holidays around the world, according to the International Labour Organization.

In France, the duration of the paid holidays increased regularly: 3 weeks in 1956, 4 in 1969, 5 in 1982, participating in the creation of a mass tourism and the development of an entire economic activity related to tourism, sports and more generally, a leisure business. Moreover, it seems that paid holidays have a positive impact on productivity. People are indeed talking about a correlation between productivity and the ability of workers to go on holiday regularly.

The working week duration decreased to 35 hours in 2000, with the Jospin Government, create an estimated 700,000 jobs. This reform is still provoking a debate.

This post is definitely not exhaustive, but I hope you have a better picture of the French at work :) !

Back from France :)

Umaima, the winner of the Click On French contest is back from her trip to France! She apparently really enjoyed her stay in Pays de la Loire, our partner!

"Our trip to France started with a few bumps… The flight to Paris was delayed by a few hours and after we reached Paris the TGV to Nantes was delayed too. Though everything was immediately forgotten by the warm welcome function that was planned in our honour. It was so nice to be received by the entire Pays de la Loire family.

The following 2 days had so much in store for us. With Isabelle our guide the Estuaire trip and sightseeing in Nantes was so much fun. Nantes was just like the French town we always wanted to visit. In our opinion Estuaire is a very creative way of attracting tourists and showing off some amazing pieces of art...

The host team of Pays de Loire was very co-operative and they made sure we enjoyed all the aspects of Nantes. We were booked at some of the finest restaurants of Nantes and got a chance to sample the most authentic types of French foods. Of all the foods the crepes definitely stole our hearts.

To sum up the trip it was one of the finest international travel experiences with a touch of amazing hospitality." Umaima

Bon voyage!

Umaima, the winner of the Click On French contest, and her husband, are back from their holiday in France!

Click On French, in partnership with the French region Pays de la Loire and the French Embassy, offered a one-week trip to France to the winners.

They first visited Nantes, the capital of the Region Pays de la Loire, where they were invited to a cocktail with the administration of the Region on the day of their arrival in France. The next day, they visited the Airbus Industry in Saint Nazaire, on the Atlantic coast, as well as Escale Atlantic, a museum in a ocean liner! The last day of their stay in Pays de la Loire was "history-oriented" with the visite of the Ducs de Bretagne Castle and the old city of Nantes!
